Most hair sold as "raw" is collected in bulk, soaked in an acid bath to strip the cuticles, then coated in silicone. It looks beautiful for three weeks. Then the silicone washes out, the cuticles rub against each other, and it tangles.

Stripped or reversed cuticles catch on each other. No treatment can fix that, it's mechanical.

The acid bath weakens the fibre. Ends get thinner and the look turns sparse within weeks.

Three signs you can check when it arrives: the cuticles glide one way and catch slightly the other, the texture varies naturally from one strand to another, and the ends stay full instead of tapering. Hair that is uniform to the millimetre has been processed.

Several years with gentle care. Because the hair has never been processed, it has no silicone to lose in the wash and isn't weakened. Its lifespan mostly depends on care: sulphate-free shampoo, gentle detangling, a satin bonnet at night. And it can be reinstalled after removal.

Yes. It straightens with a flat iron or blow-dry and gets its curl back at the next wash. It can also be coloured, ideally by a professional: heavy bleaching can change the texture, just like on your own hair.
